on monday the 13th i finally felt i had the time i needed to ride the old creaky cruiser out to Astoria Or. boy was i excited! i had been doing my best to wait patiently to get the hell out’a town and now my chance had arrived. i left late, noon actually, so much to do first. coffee, storage unit, interwebs, you know. noon time go! at a fairly steady 10 mph i made it to Scappoose around 4. when i rolled into town i noticed, along the highway hidden behind a little concrete partition , a tiny old time cemetery. this alone wouldn’t have warranted a stop except peeking up from a fist sized hole in the grass were a couple of cute little ground squirrel pups! of course i had to stop for them. after this it was off the beaten path and on to a rugged old biking/hiking path covered with trees and following a pictures mountain river. all was fine until the trail became more and more narrow before finally just dead ending at another river which i was not quite prepared for crossing. oh well back track number one. yep one of three. you see i managed to make a few silly mistakes in my haste to be away, the first of which was to use the map application built into my phone. its a great thing for making your way from one side of town to another or in search of foods and fun, but i’v obviously been in the city to long because i completely forgot the concept of a service area. haha! guess who got lost? so i’m ridding the rout i think is going to get me across this mountain range, which by the way is already kicking my ass, turns out city riding don’t mean shit in the mountains, when my “highway” turns into a gravel road. right then a guy pulls up, takes one look at the bewildered look i’m giving my phone and ventures to guess that i’m lost. he goes on to tell me that this road wont take me through but if i go back a couple miles and cross a bridge i’ll see a logging road that should take me through to a little town called Mist. how magical does that sound?! at this point my knee has been giving me some grief and although i was doing my best to ignore it, it was defiantly inhibiting my up hill abilities. so i head back and find the logging road, more by luck than the directions given. well it turns out the logging road has a milage sign, 27.5. i start making my way up. at this point i cant actually do much ridding so its just a lot of walking up hill. i do my best of course to pedal on the flat spots, it gets to the point were i just push down on my right knee with my hands but after awhile even that starts to hurt to much. so i walk. by nine or so i start looking for a place to bed down, its wet and misty around here with little bits of drizzle so i need to make a shelter. i figured at this point the best place for me is up high. the wind isn’t crazy and there’s plenty of wood around for my shelter and a fire. i finally find the perfect spot around 9:30 and get my little a frame and fire set up and get my self in bed. that night i heard the craziest noises coming from about 20 or 30 yards behind me, something like a mix between a dog bark and a bull elk in rut. spooky!! luckily the next day was mostly down the mountain, camp was at mile -18, so i got up at 8 and made it into the nearest real town, mist is not, around 10 or so and because of my knee i had to call in a rescue. this is one of the reasons i wanted to be doing these longer trips in this area was to prepare myself for the long ride south at the end of this sumer. i certainly learnt some things on this little trip. first of all paper maps are still great, maybe i should get some! second, i need to learn to take breaks, when i start riding for some reason i just want to keep moving and this obviously isn’t the best way to go. oh, also i need to be stretching at least two times a day. i need to cary at least twice as much water as i have been. lastly i need to be following creative urges more freely, just stopping any time i get the slightest inkling to make. one of the things that highlights this for me is stuff i found just laying on the side of the highway. the best things on this trip were an old buck knife that was obviously used before it got tossed and the other more surprising thing was a white frilly thong panty with black flowers that i mistook for a hanky, just laying on the highway on the side of a mountain, no big deal. so now i’m recovering, little bits of doodles and way to much tv.

it’s come to my attention

i’v come to realize, after some exhaustive online artist stalking, that two blogs is standard. really it’s two blogs, a website, and a facebook, but i’ll stick with three out of four. long story short i’m coming back to you my poor neglected wordpress. truth is i do care for you, i just need the freedom to be hopelessly inconsistent, while at the same time expecting nothing from you but the ability to update the virtualverse. so here i am.

now i’ll tell you a story:
lately i’v been living on my bicycle. i ride for hours in circles and since i’v been, in a fashion, stuck in portland i can honestly say i’v seen more of this town and its surrounding areas in the last couple weeks than in the last two years i’v lived here. wacky!

last night cuddled up in the woods, hiding in my sack from the prodding proboscis of the blood sucking swarms i was tapped!
a creature unknown snuck up behind me and tapped me three times on my neck.
i didn’t hear it arrive, i never heard it go, i lay there cuddled up and i wondered what it meant.

just a quick little post to remind the interwebs that im still alive. my doodeling is once again on the up swing and i thought i’d show a couple things from my pocket book. today i inadvertently walked down memory road, in the rain, with a tender fresh loneliness spot. that always sucks.

Yesterday i was out walking and i saw a little squirrel. it was obviously a youngen and guess what it was cute. when he saw me heading toward it on the side walk it ran up the nearest tree, which was only about 15 feet high, and looked down at me. i slowly approached the tree and started talking to the squirrel and it patiently sat there and listened to me for awhile. it started getting a little closer and was becoming quite curious indeed. i decided to make my move. seeing a perfect little twist in a branch next to me i rested my head on it and continued talking. the squirrel came still closer, and then jumped to a branch behind my head. i couldn’t see it for a little while but i wanted to know what it was doing back there so i slowly turned around and we were practically nose to nose. this made the squirrel a tad nervous. it backed a little way up the branch and then i putt my hand down where my head had been. cautiously it made its way toward my finger, then it began to sniff it, then lick it, then ever so gingerly place it in his mouth. i admit i was a tiny bit nervous myself at this point, but not as much as the squirrel. it some how got a bit spooked and lost its balance on the tree limb, and there we were. the squirrel hanging by its teeth from my right ring finger and to a branch of the tree with one tiny paw. it only took a second for the squirrel to right its self, but it felt much longer. after that it backed up the tree a little way again and at this point i realized i should be taking pictures on my phone. we talked a little while longer, i snapped a couple shot, and then it was time to go. I LOVE YOU LITTLE SQUIRREL!

well with school starting back up in full swing i have a lot to be happy about!
first off ANIMATION class! i’m excited to keep playing, improving, and seeing what i’m going to do next. also ETHNOBOTANY! who isn’t excited about that? we have to do a plant profile for the class and i’m gonna do the fig! next, art history. ok im not so excited about art history. then we have VIDEO AND SOUND! i really like the idea of this class and the skills its going to give me. but im having a hard time figuring out what to shoot right now. friday i have BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY! it’s so exciting i’v never even used an SLR before so theres definatly some learning to do but so far i love it. we already developed our first rolls and its pretty much alchemy! and lastly but not least the CHILDREN’S TEACHING INTERNSHIP! my saturday mornings are spent in the front of the class room making art with the youngens. its so nice to be teaching again, and making art with little people. right now im with a drawing class with 7 and 8 year olds. im a little rusty since i havent taught since last summer. but its really just being yourself. its actually way easier than being in a class of adults.
well i still haven’t gone pro on flickr so nothing going on there, but once again heres somthen to look at.

one of the best parts about these is my scanner is still down so i took shots of my contact sheets with my cell phone to share. teehee.
